Foundation Spotlight: Parents Guide to Cord Blood

There are many foundations that have been established to spread the word about cord blood banking and promote its use among expecting parents. One that stands out is the Parent's Guide to Cord Blood Foundation.

The Parent's Guide to Cord Blood was established in 1998 with the goal of providing parents with unbiased information about cord blood banking. In 2007, Founder Dr. Frances Verter and a newly-formed Board of Directors incorporated the initiative as a non-profit foundation.

Dr. Verter started the Foundation after her first child, Shai Miranda Verter, passed away after being diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma (a cancerous tumour in her pelvis). When she gave birth to her second child, Dr. Verter decided to bank the newborn's cord blood, as she "wanted to give my children every possible form of health insurance".

However, finding information on the topic proved to be very difficult at the time. It was then that she decided to launch the Parent's Guide to Cord Blood, in order to help other parents who may be struggling to find information on the subject.

Over the years, the Parents Guide to Cord Blood has helped a wide range of parents to make informed decisions about cord blood banking. The foundation provides the latest information about the process of cord blood banking, its medical applications, Cord blood research as well as what to look for in a Cord Blood Bank.
